Nine Months Old

Jude is 9 months old!

IMG_0025

At 9 months Jude seems heavier and taller! No doctor visit this month so I’m not sure of his exact measurements.

IMG_0120This month has been another biggie. The changes just keep coming. His ability to communicate with us has improved drastically. He expresses very strong likes and dislikes and has begun to really protest when we take something off him (usually something he shouldn’t be playing with).

IMG_9868He has been babbling like mad, only the babbles are starting to sound more and more like words. I can hear the start of sounds of words like ‘hi’, ‘hey, ‘ma’,’da’. I can have ‘conversations’ with him where I ask a question and he responds and it will go on and on. He is also clapping, waving, and giving us high 5s.

IMG_0076Jude is all over the place and into everything. We have given up on trying to contain him and just let him crawl around wherever he wants. He is so into standing now, can bend down with ease, and starting to play around with one handed and no-handed balancing!

IMG_0137He especially loves the oven:

IMG_0211With all these new places to explore he has lost a bit of interest in his toys. The only toys that seem to hold his interest at the moment are blocks and a green ball. He is also obsessed with books at the moment. Not all books- just ones that have flaps that open and reveal pictures. At bedtime he used to drink his bottle first and then read, but now he refuses to drink until we have read through all the flap books we have. He gets so incredibly excited at the sight of the books – bounces his legs up and down, smiles, and coos. So cute. These are his favorites right now:IMG_0378

Another one of his current obsessions is the vacuum. He goes nutty anytime he sees it and loves following it around the house. He also likes when we suction his clothes.

IMG_0870

One day Luke and I were playing around and suctioning his bib and it went a little too far:

Whoops! We all got a pretty good laugh.

We are still struggling with diaper changes. He hates sitting still and especially hates being on his back. We try to distract him but nothing seems to do the trick. Two people are required to do the job – Luke and I often remark that a third person would be ideal. He is also still protesting the spoon. So all his meals are finger foods. It’s actually not too bad as I find I can give him most things we eat – roast veggies, cheese, bread, and pieces of fruit. He always gets excited when he sees food, and especially when he sees us with food – we always share.

IMG_0302His eating only finger foods makes it easier for us to eat out all together. He has a few firsts this month including first McDonalds, and first pizza:

IMG_0125

IMG_0398The weather has been great here so we are still keeping up with our daily outings- riding the bike, the stroller, or in the Ergo. I take him to baby play dates or neighborhood playgrounds. Although he is still a tad too young to use the playground, but man does he love to eat all the leaves.

His nighttime sleep is still going long and strong. He sleeps from 6pm right through to 6:30am no problem. It is bliss. But he is starting to cut down on his daytime naps, so we think it might be time to drop him down to one nap a day. I have come to rely on nap time to get things done!  He almost never naps when we go out, the other day was a rare exception. I loved it- such sweetness.

IMG_9876

He is still really into the cats. Poor Fern gets tackled by him at least once a day. He still hasn’t managed to get Goose, and I doubt he ever will. She’s pretty quick.

IMG_9755

He also took his last bath in his baby tub this month and he now baths in the bath with just a few inches of water. One of us usually gets in and sits behind him as he wants to crawl or stand up all the time!

IMG_0360 Yet another great month, we can’t believe how much he has changed.

IMG_0368

There is nothing more fun in this world than watching him grow up.

30

My 30th Birthday was last Sunday. I spent the morning like this:

IMG_0129Finally getting dressed to enjoy brunch at The Diner:

IMG_9925My first meal as 30 looked like this:

IMG_9927We returned home and found this cake on our doorstep:

IMG_9955Our wonderful friend made this and it was full of all the things I like.

IMG_9970Another friend dropped these off:

IMG_9964And later that night Luke and I toasted to a new decade.

IMG_9973My actual birthday was just the start of the celebration. On Tuesday a big box arrived from my Mom and Dad with this inside:

IMG_0065I also got a new iPhone from Luke (perfect for selflies of my 30 year-old-self):

IMG_0172Luke and I got all dressed up one night, got the babysitter in, and went to dinner at Osteria.

IMG_0176We ordered the Chef’s special set menu. It was amazing.

IMG_0182We were really impressed with all the components of each dish – super well thought out.

IMG_0188Dessert was the best tiramisu I have ever had.

IMG_0194It feels good be 30!

First Job

Not even an year old and Jude has had his first job. Strangely enough there’s demand here for Westerners modeling and doing commercials. Last year I did a commercial for a Hitachi Microwave and thought it was great fun so decided to get Jude into it as well. I figured he could make a bit of cash for college and we would get some super cute photos – not a bad deal. So last week he was called to model for ‘Les Enphants‘ a popular Asian clothing brand for babies and children.

IMG_9760After we got him dressed in outfit #1, hair styled, and had his make-up put on, he got right into it.

IMG_9766There were a series of shoots, some were with a girl baby (who happens to be one of our baby play date friends) and some were solo shoots.

IMG_9770The idea was to seat them next to each other and then work hard trying to get smiles but…

IMG_9788Jude was not keen on the whole sitting part.

IMG_9791So we spent most of the different shoots trying to get him to sit still long enough for the photographer to snap a few decent photos.

IMG_9783

It was not easy, even for the pros. He is fast. Baby girl was the complete opposite. She sat still beautifully and posed like she was born to do this!

IMG_9815Thankfully they managed to get some good shots of Jude too.

IMG_9828Including him sitting still for a few different outfits.

IMG_9836They even managed a few smiles out of him (sadly, not pictured as I wasn’t fast enough).

IMG_9846Well, it was a lot of work for everyone but Jude. For him it was just play time with lots of flashing lights and outfit changes! I was pretty exhausted after but super excited to see the photos (which are due out sometime in April or May). I’m already pretty excited to tell him about his first job one day when he is older!

Eight Months Old

At eight months old Jude weighs 19lbs (8.8 kg)  and is 28 in (72cm) long.

IMG_0569Again it feels like a month of a lot of changes. He is getting smarter and savvier by the day.

IMG_0459He is so much more aware of everything going on around him and what we do.

IMG_0557He goes between wanting to be independent of us and wanting to play with toys, crawl around and explore places, and wanting to be held by one of us (or climbing on us).

IMG_0110We have a large baby gate in the lounge which we put him in with all his toys but he starts whining if we leave the room.

IMG_0129But when I let him out and crawl around, he gets into everything. It’s so much fun letting him explore but exhausting monitoring his every move!

IMG_0109Milk wise we have also had a lot of changes. I breastfed him for the last time right before he turned 8 months. Before that, for a month and a half I was only been feeding him once a day, around 5am, as he was nice and sleepy and wouldn’t bite me (like he started doing if I fed him during the day). But then he started sleeping through that feed and was waking up closer to 7am wide-awake and ravenous. So he got a full bottle instead. And so now he take three full and one half bottles a day (around 28 ounces). He gets formula as I just couldn’t keep up with pumping that much. I feel good about how long we kept breastfeeding up for even though it certainly was a challenge at times.

IMG_0113At 8 months his daily schedule looks like this:

7am: 8oz bottle

7:15am: Breakfast (scrambled eggs and toast or oatmeal with fruit)

9-10am: nap

11am: 4oz-6oz bottle

12pm: Lunch (Some kind of protein – lentils, chicken, beef, or tofu, plus veggies and fruit)

12:15-2pm: nap

2:15pm: 8oz bottle

3:30pm: snack (fruit/cereal puffs or rice crackers)

(some days if he takes short morning and afternoon naps he will have a power nap from 4-4:30pm)

5pm: Dinner (couscous or pasta mixed with cheese and veg or some kind of stew)

5:30pm: Bath

6pm: 8oz bottle, read books, then bed.

Jude went through a solid period of sleeping from 6pm- 6:30/7am, but then this happened:

IMG_0505If he woke up, he would stand up and start walking around the perimeter of the crib. We had a few nights, in the wee hours, of trying to coax him back to sleep but it was very, very hard as all he wanted to do was practice his standing, jumping, and walking. He is much better now as he can stand up and sit back down with no problem. Now if he wakes up in the middle of the night he will just sit up, play with his seahorse for awhile and then fall back asleep. Sleep, as I understand from other experienced parents, is an ongoing battle.

Another ‘battle’ we’ve had recently is in the bath. Jude figured out how much fun it is to splash. After a bath both Luke and I and our kitchen floor would be soaked.

IMG_0070So we moved his bath into the big tub and everyone is happier.

IMG_0103It’s really fun as Jude gets super excited right before bath time and wants to watch Luke fill up the tub.

IMG_0108The weather has been a bit cooler in Taipei so we’ve been getting to dress Jude in cute hats and sweater. Our favorite is beautiful sweater and matching hat Grandma Elizabeth knitted for him.

IMG_0046We’ve also been getting out of the house a lot more. The cooler weather helps as does Jude being able to sit in high chairs and eat most things we do – including apple pie and ice cream:

IMG_0001

We also got outside and tried out the new baby bike seat:

IMG_0061It was great fun. And, yes, he has a pink helmet. The blue one was sold out so we decided pink was better than nothing.

IMG_0054Jude is still obsessed with the cats. He smiles, laughs and talks to them non-stop. It’s so cute to watch.

IMG_0403His other obsession is clapping. He does it all the time and it always melts our hearts! It’s adorable – he claps when he hears music, when he sees his toys, the cats, or us. I just love it.

IMG_0030We are working on the high-5 and waving ‘bye bye’ next. He is getting close!

IMG_0026And before long he will be walking and talking.

IMG_0476We love you Jude!
